Parliamentary Candidate - Kris Hopkins

Kris's Experience

Kris was elected to Bradford Council in 1998 in Worth Valley. He subsequently became portfolio holder for social services and council housing, and later took on the corporate portfolio. Following the 2004 elections, he became Deputy Leader of Bradford Council. He was elected as Leader of the Council and Leader of the Conservative Group in May 2006. He is Chairman of both Bradford Vision, the Local Strategic Partnership, and the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Housing Board. Kris has stood as a Conservative Parliamentary candidate in the last two General Elections: in Leeds West in 2001 and in Halifax in 2005.

About Kris

Kris was born in 1963 and has a daughter. He is a former soldier who lives in Oakworth, Keighley. After serving with the Duke of Wellington's regiment, Kris studied for a degree in communications and cultural studies at Leeds University. He then lectured part-time in media theory, communications and digital media. Kris is a very active walker and runner and also a keen photographer.

Campaigning on...

Kris believes that the needs of the constituency have not been adequately addressed in Westminster over the last ten years and intends to put that right. In his view, there needs to be much more constructive leadership and stronger relationships with local businesses, potential inward investors and those public sector bodies that can make a positive contribution to the lives of people in Keighley, including the creation of more jobs. He is strong in his desire for an education system that equips our children to enter industry, commerce and university. Kris is determined to ensure that Gordon Brown's NHS cuts are stopped and standards in patient care at Airedale Hospital, one of the jewels in Keighley's crown, driven up. The pensions crisis, also created by Gordon Brown, must be solved and elderly people properly cared for. He has long argued that the debate over climate change must be placed at the top of everyone's agenda. And, for Kris, there should be a sensible but firm approach to immigration in this country including a proper limit on numbers and fair border controls.
